2- Learn How to Be an Artist With the Right Mindset.

how to be an artist

To be an artist takes hard work and willingness to constantly learn and grow. But with the right mindset and approach, it’s definitely possible. When it comes to turning my artistic dreams into a reality, I have to start by believing in myself, learning as much as I can, experimenting with different techniques and taking action to turn my passion into a career.

2.1- Believe You Can Be an Artist with Confidence.

Have you ever heard the saying, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right”?

The first step towards achieving any goal is believing that it’s possible.

Unfortunately, many of us grew up surrounded by people that didn’t believe it was achievable to pursue a career in the arts. We have been indoctrinated from early age into thinking that we must ignore our calling and become hard working and obedient employees instead.

We are often confronted with the image of the starving artist and believe that being a successful artist is only possible for a selected few.

But things have changed. With the advancement of technology, it has become easier than ever to become a profitable creative. Start becoming a confident artist.

2.2- Being Willing to Learn a Craft.

Another ingredient of the right mindset to become an artist is willingness to learn. We might need to learn or improve some sort of creative technique or craft.

Learning can be achieved by practicing, trying new things and experimenting with the things we already know.

Even if we become masters in our particular craft, there are many things we still might have to learn like marketing, promotion, networking and management.

We can find a mentor or join a local or online artist community. They can provide guidance, support and inspiration as we learn and grow as an artist.

We can learn from other artists, whether it’s through books or workshops. This can help us gain new perspectives and techniques to try in our own work. Start learning a craft online.

2.3- Becoming an Artist by Thinking Like One.

We need to have an open, curious and creative mindset. IT’s about being open to new ideas and experiences. Being willing to take risks and try new things.

It can also help to surround ourselves with people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences. Being exposed to different viewpoints and perspectives can help stimulate our thinking and inspire new ideas.

If creative thinking does not come naturally, we can train that by practicing problem solving regularly. There are many creative puzzles on the market for that.

There are also brainstorming techniques that can be a great way to generate new thoughts like free-writing, drawing, or mind mapping to spark new ideas. Expand your creativity and learn to think like an artist.

2.4- How to Be a Resilient Artist.

Inevitably, we will need to be able to cope with setbacks. This does not only apply to creative endeavours but for life in general. But for artists it is even more important because the work we make is often being criticised subjectively by everyone.

Being an artist also means being willing to take risks and push ourselves out of our comfort zone knowing it may not work.

People not liking our art or being rejected for a project is never pleasant. The trick is to be able to absorb constructive criticism and be able to cope with negative criticism. One way we can build resilience is by developing a strong support network of friends, family, and other artists who can offer encouragement and advice.

Remember that there is no such thing as failing, only learning opportunities.
How will you be able to ‘fail’ and keep on going anyway in order to grow and develop as an artist? Build your resilience as an artist.
